A Historic Tuscan Castle for Restoration, just 20 km from Florence
Nestled on the rolling hills of Tuscany, this magnificent property is located just 30 minutes by car from the heart of Florence. Surrounded by lush olive groves and dense forests, it offers breathtaking views over the valley below, dotted with charming country villages. To the rear of the Castle, two neighboring country Villas enhance the sense of an ancient borgo, transporting you back in time. The property is free from any restrictions by the “Belle Arti,” providing ample opportunities for restoration and customization. The estate spans approximately 980 sqm /10548 sqf, across three floors, with additional space in the cellars.
A Rich History Dating Back to the 13th Century
The first known reference to the Castello is a parchment from 1217, documenting the sale of the property by the Conti Gianni di Greve. This important document is preserved in the Florence State Archives. The castle’s history took a turn after the Battle of Montaperti in 1280, when it was likely abandoned and left in ruins. It wasn’t until the 1600s, however, that the Altoviti family reconstructed the castle as a villa to celebrate a marriage between an Altoviti and a Medici family member. As part of the restoration, a chapel was built, adorned with frescoes depicting the newlywed couple. The north wing was added, featuring elegant stone columns and capitals, and large reception rooms, while the villa’s stonework proudly displays the carved Altoviti crests on the fireplaces and other architectural details.
Timeless Beauty and Authentic Tuscan Charm
The first floor showcases tempera-painted walls and ceilings dating from 1850, as well as the 16th-century frescoed chapel. The main sitting room features exquisite handmade terracotta tiles also crafted in 1850. On the second floor, traditional Tuscan design elements prevail, with terracotta floors, stone window and door frames, and exposed beam ceilings. Some rooms feature chestnut coffered ceilings that add an extra layer of elegance.
Expansive Land and Historic Vines
The Castle is set on approximately 4.5 hectares of land, including chestnut woods, pine forests, and terraced landscapes. The estate also boasts an orchard with fruit trees and the historic ‘chioppi’ terraced vines, once used to produce Vino Chianti di Castello until the 1960s. While the land has become overgrown over the years, it remains fertile and could be restored to reintroduce vineyards, benefiting from the excellent grape-growing conditions provided by the land’s elevation. The estate’s cellars, which once housed wine production, could easily be repurposed for winemaking again, or transformed into workshop studios, as they feature large doors that open directly to the outdoors.
This extraordinary castle offers endless possibilities to create something truly special. The tranquil surroundings, coupled with its proximity to Florence, make it an ideal setting for those seeking both seclusion and easy access to cultural and historical treasures. Don’t miss your chance to own a part of Tuscany’s timeless heritage and bring this hidden gem back to life.
